A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Tyrome Gatewood Jr., a teenager who was killed in Pittsburgh’s Knoxville neighborhood on Thursday afternoon.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Kyhree Harper, 17.
According to court documents, a witness reported that Harper and Gatewood were handling firearms and reloading magazines when the shooting occurred.
The incident was first reported at approximately 1:09 p.m. when Pittsburgh police responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 100 block of Rochelle Street.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a 17-year-old male inside a residence suffering from a gunshot wound.
Officers provided life-saving measures until medics arrived, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner later identified the victim as Tyrome Gatewood Jr. of Carrick.
Police confirmed that a person of interest was detained for questioning shortly after the shooting, and authorities have since taken Harper into custody in connection with Gatewood’s death.
Investigators have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
The case remains under active investigation by Pittsburgh Police detectives.
