According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred shortly after midnight. Derrick was driving a Dodge Challenger eastbound on Highway 180 near Clovis Avenue, reaching speeds of up to 130 miles per hour. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Derrick, for reasons still unknown, continued to speed away. As he exited the highway onto Temperance Avenue, his vehicle accelerated to approximately 150 miles per hour. Tragically, Derrick lost control on the off-ramp — the car went airborne and overturned multiple times. Because he was not wearing a seatbelt, Derrick was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
