Seven Killed in Fiery Crash Involving Tour Van Near Yellowstone National Park
A devastating collision occurred near Yellowstone National Park on Thursday evening, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals. The crash involved a Dodge Ram pickup truck and a Mercedes tour van carrying 14 passengers, occurring just before 7:15 p.m. on U.S. Highway 20 near Henry’s Lake State Park in eastern Idaho, approximately 16 miles west of the park entrance .
Both vehicles caught fire following the impact. Six passengers in the van and the driver of the pickup truck perished in the blaze. Eight other individuals sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment .
Roger Merrill, a local resident who witnessed the aftermath, described the scene as “extremely busy” and noted the highway’s reputation as a dangerous route leading to Yellowstone. He captured video footage showing the van engulfed in flames and smoke, with emergency responders arriving after a delayed response due to the remote location .
The Idaho State Police are investigating the cause of the crash. The Fremont County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the names of the victims, as authorities are still in the process of notifying next of kin .
This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of U.S. Highway 20, which averages approximately 10,500 vehicles per day and has been identified by the Idaho Transportation Department for safety improvements .
