Port Orange, FL — Authorities have identified the suspect involved in the recent Port Orange Walgreens shooting as 60-year-old Daniel Lee Asseff. The incident, which unfolded at the Walgreens located near Dunlawton Avenue, left both employees and customers in shock as police responded swiftly to reports of an active shooter.

The shooting occurred on the evening of May 7, 2025. According to the Port Orange Police Department, Asseff entered the pharmacy area of the store and began firing a weapon, targeting a Walgreens employee. One individual was critically injured in the attack and rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Their current condition has not been disclosed.

Asseff was subdued by law enforcement on-site and taken into custody without further incident. He is currently facing multiple charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault with a firearm. Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the shooting, though early reports suggest there may have been a personal dispute involved.

“This could have been far worse,” Port Orange Police Chief Thomas Grimaldi said in a statement. “Thanks to the quick action of both store staff and responding officers, a potentially deadly situation was brought under control swiftly.”

Walgreens has expressed concern for the victims and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Security footage and witness statements are being reviewed to piece together the full sequence of events.

Daniel Lee Asseff is being held without bond at the Volusia County Jail. His court date is expected to be announced later this week.
