DAYTON, OH — Heartbreak has engulfed the Dayton community following the tragic shooting death of 22-year-old Amadou Diallo early Monday morning, June 23, at a Speedway gas station near the University of Dayton. The senseless act of violence has left family, friends, and residents devastated and seeking answers.

According to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, Diallo was transported to Miami Valley Hospital shortly after the shooting but succumbed to his injuries soon after arrival. The coroner has yet to release a final ruling on the official cause and manner of death.

Dayton police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 12:09 a.m. at the Speedway located at 121 E. Stewart Street, a high-traffic area near East Stewart and Brown Streets. Witnesses told dispatchers they heard five to six gunshots ring out near the store, prompting a swift emergency response.

Lt. Eric Sheldon of the Dayton Police Department confirmed that officers found Diallo at the scene with gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by medics, Diallo could not be saved. The case is now under investigation by the department’s Homicide Unit, which is analyzing surveillance footage and seeking eyewitness accounts.
