DILLON COUNTY, S.C. (June 28, 2025) — Authorities in Dillon County have released new details following the tragic shooting that claimed the life of 61-year-old Patricia Britt at the popular South of the Border tourist attraction on Thursday, June 27. The incident has shocked the local community and led to the arrests of three individuals now facing serious charges.

The victim, Patricia Britt of Marlboro County, was fatally shot during what officials describe as a confrontation that escalated into gunfire on the premises of South of the Border, located near the North Carolina-South Carolina border. Emergency crews responded to the scene promptly, but Britt was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Following a joint investigation by the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), three suspects were arrested without incident. Those charged include:

Tina Rebecca Pernell, 46

Ja’Heem Antwan Pernell, 20

Aalyiah Monique Priest, 22

All three individuals have been charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Authorities have indicated that more charges may be filed as the investigation continues. The suspects are currently being held without bond at the Dillon County Detention Center.

Law enforcement officials say the shooting stemmed from an altercation involving multiple individuals, though the exact motive remains under investigation. Investigators are working to piece together the full sequence of events that led to the deadly outcome.
