Authorities have charged Charles Leto, 55, a longtime Chicago Park District employee, with first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the brazen act of violence, which unfolded in broad daylight near the park’s public swimming pool around 7:00 p.m. on June 27.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the two teenage boys were standing near the pool in the 1400 block of South Sacramento Drive when Leto allegedly approached and opened fire. The 15-year-old victim was shot in the back and later died at Stroger Hospital. The 14-year-old was shot in the neck and remains in critical condition in intensive care, with possible brain damage, according to family attorney Torreya Neslund.

“He’s fighting for his life,” Neslund stated. “We are asking the community to keep him in their prayers as we hope for a full recovery, though we fear the injuries may be permanent.”

The arrest of Leto — who was employed at the very park where the shooting occurred — has horrified many. Police have not yet confirmed a motive or any known connection between Leto and the victims. The Chicago Park District has closed the Douglass Park pool and launched an internal investigation, while pledging full cooperation with authorities.

In a powerful and heartbreaking twist, the 14-year-old victim is reportedly a relative of Laquan McDonald, the teenager whose 2014 killing by a Chicago police officer ignited national protests and reform efforts. Pastor Marvin Hunter, McDonald’s great-uncle, spoke out following the incident.

“One young life is lost, another hangs in the balance — and it happened at a pool meant to be a place of safety,” Pastor Hunter said. “Our children deserve better. We must do better as a city.”

No statement has yet been issued from the Mayor’s office, but city leaders are expected to address the public in the coming days.

The shooting has sent shockwaves through North Lawndale, a community already burdened by gun violence and systemic challenges. Thursday’s shooting, taking place in a space typically filled with laughter and family fun, underscores growing concerns about safety in public recreational areas.
