The incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. on Route 1 South near Southgate Road, a well-traveled stretch frequented by both vehicles and cyclists. According to Scarborough Police, 59-year-old Howard Gribbin was struck by the SUV while riding his bicycle. He was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

The SUV fled the scene, and investigators believe the vehicle likely sustained significant front-end damage. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that may help identify the driver or locate the vehicle.

In the aftermath of the crash, Route 1 between Haigis Parkway and Payne Road was closed for approximately three hours as investigators processed the scene. The road has since reopened.

The fatality has reignited concern among cycling safety advocates and local residents. Andrew Zarro, Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, highlighting the persistent dangers faced by cyclists on Maine roads.

“Whether it’s a fatality like it was today or a major or minor incident, it’s heartbreaking. We hate to see this happen,” Zarro said.

According to the Coalition, 56 cyclist-involved crashes have occurred statewide this year, including two fatalities. Distracted driving, they say, remains a leading cause.

Tim, a frequent cyclist from nearby Portland, pointed out the role of poor road conditions in these crashes.

“If I have to swerve out of the way of a big pothole, then it’s probably tough for cars to predict that, and it could result in a bad situation,” he explained.

Zarro emphasized shared responsibility between drivers and cyclists in preventing such tragedies.

“Cyclists can do the ABCs of being safe—wear bright, light clothing, and use lights on their bikes. Drivers must stay alert, avoid distractions, follow the rules, and slow down,” he said.

Howard Gribbin’s death marks yet another reminder of the vulnerability of cyclists and the urgent need for improved awareness, infrastructure, and enforcement. His community now mourns a life cut short in an entirely preventable tragedy.

Anyone with information related to the silver SUV or the crash is urged to contact the Scarborough Police Department immediately.
