MERCED COUNTY, CA — A devastating two-vehicle collision in Merced County claimed the life of one man and left two others injured on the evening of Friday, June 27, 2025, near the intersection of State Route 59 and Sandy Mush Road.
At approximately 8:11 p.m., the Merced Communications Center (MCC) alerted California Highway Patrol (CHP) units to a serious crash involving a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup and a 2024 Freightliner semi-truck.
Upon arrival, CHP officers discovered that the semi-truck had T-boned the pickup truck on the passenger side, pinning both occupants of the Silverado inside. Emergency responders acted quickly to extricate the victims, but tragically, the 35-year-old male passenger from Burlingame, CA, was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
According to CHP investigators, Rafael Morales Contreras, 29, of San Mateo, CA, was driving the Silverado eastbound on Sandy Mush Road. He reportedly failed to stop at the posted stop sign at the intersection and drove into the path of a northbound Freightliner traveling at approximately 55 mph on SR-59.
The semi-truck, operated by Miguel Angel Ramirez, 59, of Winton, CA, collided with the Silverado, causing extensive damage and a prolonged emergency response.
Both Morales Contreras and Ramirez sustained moderate injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Factors such as right-of-way violations and driver error are under review.
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact Investigating Officer Gabriel Partida at (209) 356-6600. Media inquiries can be directed to Public Information Officer Eric C. Zuniga at (209) 356-6608.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The Merced County community mourns the loss of a life taken far too soon in this tragic accident.
