OPP, AL — The community of Opp is in mourning after the heartbreaking death of Christy Dawn Shaw, a 20-year-old woman remembered for her warmth, compassion, and joyful spirit. Christy tragically lost her life in a head-on car crash on June 27, 2025, leaving family, friends, and the broader community devastated.
The fatal accident occurred Friday afternoon on Covington County Road 70 near Mary Williamson Road, approximately five miles northeast of Andalusia’s city limits. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Christy was driving a 2025 Kia K4 when it collided head-on with a 2014 Dodge Charger driven by 37-year-old Travis B. Duke of Andalusia. Both drivers were not wearing seat belts and were pronounced dead at the scene.
An 18-year-old passenger in Christy’s vehicle survived the crash and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Senior Trooper Joshua Thompson is leading the ongoing investigation into the cause of the collision.
