On May 22, 2025, Chicago police arrested 21-year-old Rey Gonzalez in connection with a violent stabbing that left a 43-year-old man seriously injured. The incident occurred on May 3 in the 2800 block of South Kedzie Avenue in the city’s Little Village neighborhood. Gonzalez faces multiple felony charges, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, and mob action involving violence.

According to authorities, Gonzalez approached the victim, identified as Francisco Fernandez, and inquired about his gang affiliation. Believing Fernandez to be a rival gang member, Gonzalez allegedly began punching and stomping him before stabbing him on the right side of his body. Fernandez was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and later released.

Gonzalez was apprehended by Chicago police officers and members of the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force in the 3100 block of West Harrison Street. He is currently being held in custody pending trial.

The violent nature of the attack has raised concerns among residents of the West Side community. Local leaders and community organizations are calling for increased efforts to address violence in the area and to provide support for victims and their families.
