PHILLIPSBURG, KAN. — June 28, 2025 — The community of Phillips County is grieving the tragic loss of Deputy Sheriff Brandon Gaede, who was killed in the line of duty during an officer-involved shooting late Friday night, June 27, in Phillipsburg. The fatal incident, which occurred at the intersection of 1st and E Street, has left the rural northwestern Kansas town heartbroken and united in mourning.
Deputy Gaede, 44, responded to a call regarding a fireworks disturbance shortly before midnight. According to the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office, an exchange of gunfire ensued during the response, leaving both Gaede and the suspect fatally wounded. Despite the swift efforts of fellow deputies and first responders, Gaede was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Hero Remembered
Deputy Gaede was more than just a badge—he was a protector, a friend, a husband, and a father. Known for his calm demeanor, professional integrity, and deep compassion, he had earned widespread respect from fellow officers and the community he served.
“Brandon was the deputy every sheriff hopes to have on their team,” the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “He served with courage and compassion until the very end. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
Gaede leaves behind his beloved wife, Karlye, and their three young children. His family was his foundation, and he was known to speak with pride about his role as a father and husband. Those who knew him say he embodied selflessness and strength both on duty and at home.
Investigation Underway
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has taken over the investigation, as is standard for officer-involved shootings in the state. While the identity of the suspect has not been released, the KBI has urged the public to refrain from speculation as agents gather evidence, interview witnesses, and reconstruct the events leading to the deadly encounter.
Findings from the investigation will be submitted to the Phillips County Attorney’s Office upon completion.
Community in Grief, Unity in Support
The tragic loss has cast a pall over Phillipsburg and the greater Phillips County region. Flags fly at half-staff, and outside the Sheriff’s Office, a makeshift memorial grows with flowers, candles, and messages of love and gratitude.
“He was more than a uniform—he was part of our community, part of our families,” said one resident. “We’ve lost a protector, but we’ve also lost a friend.”
Condolences have poured in from across Kansas and beyond. The Holdrege Police Department shared in a social media tribute:
“Phillips County KS Deputy Sheriff Brandon Gaede passed away last night as the result of an officer-involved shooting. He is survived by his wife Karlye and 3 young children. Prayers to the family. RIP Brother.”
Supporting the Gaede Family
Efforts are underway to support Deputy Gaede’s widow and children. A verified fundraising campaign will soon be announced through the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office and affiliated organizations to help cover funeral expenses and provide long-term assistance to the grieving family.
“Now is the time to rally around the Gaedes,” said a spokesperson for the Kansas State Fraternal Order of Police. “They have lost a husband and a father. We must ensure they never feel alone.”
A Legacy That Will Live On
Plans for a public memorial service are being finalized and will soon be shared with the community. Deputy Gaede’s sacrifice will be honored not only by the law enforcement community but by the countless lives he touched during his years of service.
In his memory, Phillips County reflects on the true meaning of public service and the cost of keeping communities safe.
Rest easy, Deputy Brandon Gaede. Your watch has ended, but your legacy of bravery, love, and duty lives on.
