Des Moines Hit-and-Run: Mario Campos Charged in Fatal Crash That Killed Andrew Verwers
DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines community is mourning the tragic loss of 53-year-old Andrew Verwers, who was killed in a hit-and-run crash on June 23. Authorities have arrested Mario Campos, 44, in connection with the fatal incident, charging him with multiple felonies including homicide by vehicle–OWI and leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

According to the Des Moines Police Department, the deadly collision occurred around 8:17 p.m. at the intersection of Merle Hay Road and Hickman Road. Verwers was reportedly sitting on a concrete median when a Dodge Ram pickup truck mounted the curb, struck a traffic sign, and fatally hit him. The driver of the truck fled the scene, failing to render aid or call for emergency help.

Paramedics rushed Verwers to Methodist Hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Police later located the suspected vehicle in the 2500 block of 44th Street. When they confronted Campos, he allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and the odor of alcohol. He reportedly admitted to being the driver and confessed to drinking prior to the crash. A preliminary breath test confirmed his BAC was over Iowa’s legal limit of 0.08.

Campos is now facing two felony charges, both of which underscore the gravity of the fatal crash and the alleged impaired driving that caused it. Legal proceedings are expected to continue in the coming weeks as the case progresses through the courts.

The death of Andrew Verwers has left family, friends, and the broader Des Moines community reeling. Remembered as a kind and compassionate man, his sudden and preventable death has reignited urgent conversations about drunk driving and public safety.

“This was completely avoidable,” said a community member familiar with the case. “Andrew was an innocent man, just sitting there. It’s heartbreaking.”

Police are using the incident as a sobering reminder of the deadly consequences of impaired driving. “This case illustrates the irreversible harm that can result from one reckless decision,” said a DMPD spokesperson. “We urge everyone to make responsible choices behind the wheel.”

Verwers’ family has asked for privacy during this difficult time as they grieve a loved one lost too soon. A memorial is expected to be announced in the coming days.

Anyone with additional information about the crash is encouraged to contact the Des Moines Police Department.
