Emery Chalekian Obituary; San Diego, CA Community Grieves 12-Year-Old Girl Killed in Encinitas Crosswalk Accident

The Encinitas community is mourning the tragic loss of 12-year-old Emery Chalekian, who was fatally struck in a crosswalk on Friday evening, April 25, 2025. The accident occurred at approximately 6:51 p.m. at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Village Square Drive. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, a westbound Nissan Xterra, driven by a 44-year-old man, collided with a southbound Ford Fusion, also driven by a 44-year-old man. Following the collision, the Xterra veered and struck Emery as she was crossing the street in the designated crosswalk. Despite immediate emergency response, Emery was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emery was a beloved student at Park Dale Lane Elementary School, known for her bright spirit, compassion, and radiant smile. She had a profound impact on her classmates, teachers, and the broader community. To honor her memory, the school community wore yellow—Emery’s favorite color—on Monday, April 27. A memorial has been established outside the school, adorned with flowers, stuffed animals, handwritten notes, and artwork from those who cherished her.

Emery is survived by her loving parents, John and Bridget Chalekian, and her brother, Colter. In the wake of this unimaginable tragedy, a Meal Train has been organized to support the Chalekian family, providing meals, gift cards, and other acts of kindness. Community members wishing to contribute can sign up to offer support, helping to ease the family’s burden during this difficult time.
