The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) is mourning the loss of one of its own, Firefighter and Paramedic Graham Hoffman, who tragically died on Sunday, April 27, 2025, from injuries sustained during what began as a routine medical call.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY - GOD BLESS YOU

The incident occurred early in the morning, around 1 a.m., when emergency crews were called to a medical call in the area of North Oak and 152 Highway. Hoffman and his partner responded to the scene, where they encountered a patient in need of emergency medical assistance.

However, during transport to Saint Luke’s Hospital, the situation took a tragic turn. The patient, who was being treated by Hoffman and his partner, suddenly stabbed him in the chest. The assault occurred while the team was in transit, and it left Hoffman critically injured.

In the wake of the attack, Hoffman’s partner immediately requested additional support, prompting a swift response from both KCFD and the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD). The patient was taken into custody and is facing charges for her actions, though her identity has not been released at this time.

Hoffman was rushed to North Kansas City Hospital, where he received emergency treatment and was initially listed in critical condition. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Hoffman succumbed to his injuries later that same day, leaving behind a grieving community and a department that will never forget his service and sacrifice.

Kansas City Fire Department Chief Ross Grundyson expressed the department’s sorrow, saying, “Graham Hoffman was a dedicated first responder who put his life on the line every day to serve the people of Kansas City. His death is a heartbreaking tragedy, not only for our department but for the entire city.”

Mayor Quinton Lucas also shared his condolences, stating on social media, “Today, we lost a hero. Firefighter Graham Hoffman gave his life in the service of others, and we will never forget the sacrifice he made. Our city stands with his family, the Kansas City Fire Department, and all those affected by this devastating loss.”

The Mayor further acknowledged that the patient involved in the incident had been identified and was expected to face serious charges, emphasizing the gravity of the harm caused to someone who was simply doing his job to provide emergency medical care.

Firefighter Hoffman was just beginning his career with the Kansas City Fire Department. Though he had only served since 2022, his impact was already felt throughout the department.

He was known for his work ethic, his kind and compassionate nature, and his unwavering dedication to helping those in need. Colleagues and friends remember him as someone who approached his work with a deep sense of duty, always willing to go the extra mile for others, no matter the circumstances.

As a firefighter-paramedic, Hoffman understood the inherent risks that came with the job, but that did not stop him from continuing to serve with courage. His tragic death is a stark reminder of the dangers that first responders face every day, often in unpredictable and dangerous situations.

Those who knew him are left with heavy hearts, but they will carry on his legacy by continuing to serve the community with the same passion and commitment he displayed throughout his career.

The Kansas City Fire Department, alongside the City of Kansas City, will hold a press conference later on Sunday, April 27, to address the situation and provide further details on the incident. Fire Chief Ross Grundyson and Interim City Manager Kimiko Gilmore are expected to speak at the press event.

In this time of grief, Graham Hoffman’s family and friends are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from the community. Memorial services and ways to honor his memory will be shared in the days ahead.

Graham Hoffman’s life and sacrifice will not be forgotten. His commitment to service and his courage in the face of danger exemplify the true spirit of a hero. Rest in peace, Firefighter Graham Hoffman. Your bravery, kindness, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew you.
