HAMILTON COUNTY, NE — A tragic accident during Wednesday afternoon’s stormy weather has claimed the life of Brett Peters, 37, a Central City resident, in a devastating rollover crash on Highway 34 near the Platte River bridge. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by wet and slippery roads.

Hamilton County Chief Deputy Aaron Smith reported the crash occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. as Peters was driving westbound in a white van. Due to heavy rain, the vehicle is believed to have hydroplaned, causing it to fishtail and roll over several times before striking a mailbox and a tree. The van ultimately came to rest upside down on the side of the highway.

Emergency responders arrived swiftly but pronounced Peters dead at the scene. No other vehicles or passengers were involved. Weather conditions, including a strong downpour and reduced visibility, played a significant role in the accident.

Deputy Smith urged drivers to exercise caution during storms. “It only takes a moment of lost control for tragedy to occur. Please slow down, use headlights, and maintain safe distances in rain,” he said.

The news of Peters’ passing has deeply affected the Central City community. Known for his kindness, humility, and willingness to help others, Peters was remembered as a dependable and caring individual. Friends praised his generous spirit, with one noting, “He would always stop to help someone in need. It’s heartbreaking to lose him this way.”

Memorial services will be arranged in the coming days, with the family requesting privacy. Authorities continue to investigate the crash but have found no evidence of foul play, attributing the tragedy primarily to hydroplaning on wet roads.

As the community grieves, Peters’ death underscores the urgent need for vigilance and safety when driving in inclement weather. His memory will live on as a reminder to all motorists to respect the hazards that rain and slick surfaces can present.

Brett Peters, 37, tragically lost but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
