SUPPORT THE FAMILY - GOD BLESS YOU

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, officers responded to the 200 block of Brookdale Avenue, near 227 Brookdale, just after 6:00 p.m. There, police discovered two teenage boys suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were rushed to University Hospital.

Despite emergency medical efforts, Ziad Cook succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m. The second victim, a 17-year-old whose name has not yet been released, remains in critical condition as of Friday morning.

Rising Star Silenced
Ziad was a rising junior and a standout football player at Irvington High. Known for his discipline, humility, and strong academic and athletic aspirations, he had dreams of reaching college and building a better future through sports.

“He was one of those kids who did everything right,” said one of his teachers. “He respected everyone. He worked hard. He was focused. This is just devastating.”

Grief has gripped the school and surrounding community. On Friday, classmates and staff gathered outside the school, leaving flowers and jerseys in Ziad’s memory. Some hugged in silence. Others openly wept. Grief counselors have been made available to help students and staff cope with the loss.

“He was more than just a football player,” said a teammate. “Ziad was a brother, a friend. Someone you could count on. He had dreams, man. This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Investigation Ongoing
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is leading the investigation. So far, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not released any information about possible suspects or motives.

Police are asking the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward as they seek justice for Ziad and answers for the community.

A Community in Mourning
Ziad’s death has sent a shockwave through the community—another bright young life lost to senseless gun violence. Students, faculty, neighbors, and local leaders are all expressing outrage and sadness, calling not only for justice but for real solutions to protect young lives.

A candlelight vigil in Ziad’s memory is being organized by students and community members. Details are expected to be announced in the coming days.

As the investigation continues, Ziad Cook is remembered not just for his athletic talent, but for his character, leadership, and dreams.

Rest in peace, Ziad. Your light touched many and will not be forgotten.
