Joshua Nasir Farrakhan, the second eldest son of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and Mother Khadijah Farrakhan, passed away on November 18, 2023, at the age of 64. His sudden departure was attributed to a massive heart attack following hospitalization for chest pains.

Born on January 25, 1959, in Boston, Massachusetts, Joshua Nasir Farrakhan was immersed in the teachings and mission of the Nation of Islam (NOI) from an early age. He attended Kenwood Academy High School and the Muhammad University of Islam in Chicago, where he developed a profound understanding of his cultural and religious heritage.

Contributions to the Nation of Islam

In 1977, Joshua played a pivotal role in supporting his father’s efforts to rebuild the NOI, following the passing of Elijah Muhammad. His dedication and commitment were instrumental during this transformative period, as he worked tirelessly to uphold and propagate the organization’s principles.

His efforts were acknowledged by Student Minister Ishmael Muhammad, who noted Joshua’s invaluable contributions during the early stages of the NOI’s resurgence.

Personal Life

In 1978, Joshua married Marie Muhammad, the daughter of Elijah Muhammad, further strengthening the bonds within the NOI community. The couple was blessed with six children: Joshua Jr., Elijah, Louis, Fard, Muhammad, and Olivia. His family life was a testament to his commitment to faith, community, and the values instilled in him from a young age.

Throughout his life, Joshua faced challenges that tested his resilience. In 2001, he survived a violent incident where he was shot and beaten by unidentified assailants in Chicago. Despite the severity of the attack, he recovered, demonstrating remarkable strength and perseverance.

Passing and Legacy

Joshua’s unexpected passing on November 18, 2023, was a profound loss to his family and the NOI community. A Janazah (funeral) service was held on November 25, 2023, at Mosque Maryam in Chicago, where family members, friends, and believers gathered to honor his memory. The service was described as a celebration of a vibrant life, reflecting the deep love and respect held for him.

He is survived by his parents, eight siblings, eight sons—Joshua Jr. (Anne), Elijah, Louis (Kristy), Fard, Muhammad, Amey, Khalifah, and Sharrieff—and his youngest daughter, Olivia Bender. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his daughter Melia and his brother Louis Farrakhan Jr.

Joshua’s life was characterized by unwavering dedication to his family, faith, and community. His contributions to the Nation of Islam and his resilience in the face of adversity have left an indelible mark on those who knew him. As the community reflects on his legacy, his memory serves as an enduring inspiration for future generations.
