Lenexa, KS — June 22, 2025 — A grieving family in Lenexa is calling for transparency and justice after the fatal police shooting of 33-year-old Jose Enrique Cartagena Chacon early Sunday morning. According to family members, Jose was asleep in his vehicle near an apartment complex when police officers shot him from behind, raising serious questions about the circumstances of the shooting.
Lenexa Police say officers responded at around 3:00 a.m. to reports of a disturbance involving a person allegedly armed with a firearm near W. 97th Terrace. Upon arrival, officers found Jose inside a parked car near the pool clubhouse. The details surrounding the shooting are under intense investigation, with conflicting accounts and no official explanation yet on why a firearm was discharged.
Jose’s family and advocates maintain that possessing a firearm is not a crime if the individual is not threatening anyone. They stress that Jose was asleep and posed no immediate danger. “We are heartbroken, confused, and outraged,” a family member said. “We were not notified promptly, and now we are left with silence and grief. We demand transparency.”
The family is pressing for the release of body camera footage to clarify the events leading to Jose’s death and to hold those responsible accountable. They criticize what they describe as a pattern of excessive force by local law enforcement, especially in communities of color, calling for urgent reform and better policing practices focused on de-escalation.
Witnesses in the neighborhood have expressed similar concerns over police conduct, fueling community calls for accountability. The Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team (OICIIT), with the Olathe Police Department as the independent host agency, is leading the ongoing investigation.
Officials have not disclosed details such as the number of officers involved, whether a weapon was recovered, or the sequence of events preceding the shooting. The identities of the officers remain confidential.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward by contacting the Olathe Police Department at (913) 971-6363 or by submitting anonymous tips to the Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
As the investigation unfolds, community vigils and public support continue to grow, with loved ones and neighbors united in mourning and demanding justice for Jose Enrique Cartagena Chacon.
