Des Moines, IA – A moving tribute took place at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines on June 20, 2025, as family, friends, and hospital staff gathered to honor the life of Lily Montalvo, a young woman remembered for her joyful spirit, vibrant humor, and infectious smile.
Shortly after 7:30 a.m., Lily was wheeled down the first-floor hallway of the hospital, surrounded by dozens of loved ones and caregivers who stood in silent tribute. Her beloved dog, Junior, also stood by her side, a touching reminder of the special bond they shared.
Lily’s family has made the selfless decision to donate her organs, ensuring her legacy of kindness and compassion will live on through others.
Loved ones reflected on Lily’s joyful personality, recalling her trademark sense of humor and her love for drawing on fake moustaches and wearing playful makeup. Her best friend, Yanessia Montes, described her as always smiling and full of life.
“She was really silly,” Yanessia shared. “She always had a smile on her face.”
Yanessia’s mother echoed the sentiment, saying, “She was always so positive and funny. She lit up the room. I always knew when she was in the house.”
Lily was preparing to enter her sophomore year at Hampton-Dumont-CAL High School this fall. Though her time was short, her impact on the people around her was immeasurable.
As the community grieves, they also celebrate the bright, spirited young woman who brought laughter and love into so many lives. Lily’s memory will continue to inspire those who knew her, and her final act of generosity through organ donation speaks to the depth of her heart.
