Lakeview, AL — Today marks a devastating chapter for Mike and Susan Townsend of Lakeview, Alabama, as they walk into a funeral home to make final arrangements for their beloved son, Michael Townsend, who tragically lost his life in a workplace accident earlier this week.
Michael, 39, was a dedicated father, Navy veteran, and proud alum of Brookwood High School, where he made his mark as both a football player and wrestler. He was a member of the Class of 2005 and known by many for his wit, kindness, and deep love for his family and country.
Michael served five years aboard a Navy submarine, a testament to his courage and commitment. After his military service, he returned home and built a life with his wife, Jennifer, and their four children: Victoria (11), Emileea (9), and twins Tre and Serenity (6). Together, the family made countless memories filled with laughter, school projects, vacations, and unwavering love.
Tragedy first struck the Townsend household last summer when Jennifer passed away at the age of 35 following a courageous battle with health issues. Her love for singing and arts and crafts lives on in the memories of her children. Her passing left a tremendous void, one Michael tried his best to fill while raising their children in their Oak Grove home with the support of Jennifer’s mother, who still lives there today.
But heartbreak returned just days ago. On Monday night, Mike and Susan received a call no parent ever wants to hear. Their son had been involved in a railcar accident at U.S. Steel in Fairfield, where he worked. According to reports, Michael became trapped between two railcars around 9:40 p.m. He did not survive.
Now, four young children are left grieving the loss of both parents within a year—a pain no child should ever have to bear.
“They’re staying with Jennifer’s mother, who has been their constant,” Mike shared. “We’re grateful they can remain in the home they know.”
Michael was remembered not just as a veteran and father, but as a joyful soul who loved God, his family, sports, and billiards. “He was a Godly man,” said his father, Mike. “Always so happy. Always proud.”
As the family prepares for a 12:30 p.m. appointment at the funeral home today, their hearts are heavy but filled with love for a man whose legacy is defined by service, strength, and devotion to those he cherished most.
The community is asked to keep Victoria, Emileea, Tre, and Serenity in their prayers as they navigate life without the two people who meant the world to them.
Condolences and support may be shared with the Townsend family and extended loved ones.
