A serious incident unfolded today in the Olentangy Local School District as multiple elementary schools were placed on lockdown following reports of threats against district schools.
According to a statement from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), Freedom Trail Elementary, Oak Creek Elementary, and Tyler Run Elementary were among the campuses impacted by the emergency alert.
The district’s leadership team was promptly informed by the DCSO that multiple law enforcement agencies had received credible reports of threats targeting area schools.
As a result, law enforcement officers were immediately dispatched to the affected schools, and emergency protocols were enacted without delay. Parents, guardians, and community members were notified that students and staff were safe inside the buildings and that lockdown measures were being taken as a precaution.
According to school officials, students remained in their classrooms, and access to and from the schools was restricted while law enforcement thoroughly assessed the situation.
“Our top priority is always the safety of our students and staff,” the district stated in an official communication. “We are working closely with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office to ensure the situation is fully investigated, and we appreciate the swift response of law enforcement.”
While the nature of the threats has not yet been disclosed publicly, authorities have confirmed that they are treating the situation with the utmost seriousness. Officers on the scene conducted methodical sweeps of the campuses, looking for any potential threat.
As of now, no injuries have been reported, and no suspects have been taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are working to determine whether the threats were credible or part of a larger coordinated effort.
Parents were urged not to come to the schools while the lockdowns remained in effect, both to avoid disrupting law enforcement activity and to maintain safety. The district promised timely updates as new information became available and encouraged families to rely on official district channels for accurate information.
“I know how frightening this must be for families,” said one parent who was notified of the lockdown while at work. “But I’m grateful the schools acted quickly and that the sheriff’s office responded as fast as they did. I just want my child to come home safe.”
The lockdowns are a sobering reminder of the vulnerability that schools across the nation face when it comes to threats and safety concerns. The Olentangy Local School District has regularly reviewed and updated its safety procedures, including active threat response training, in partnership with local law enforcement. Today’s events will likely reinforce the importance of these measures and prompt further evaluation of how threats are received, assessed, and responded to.
The DCSO has stated that more details will be shared once the investigation develops further. Meanwhile, school counselors and support staff will be made available to students and staff in the days ahead, recognizing the emotional toll that such emergencies can have on young learners and educators.
As the situation continues to evolve, the community is united in its hope for a peaceful resolution and for the continued safety of all students and school staff in the Olentangy district.
