GARY, Ind. — June 28, 2025 — The city of Gary is reeling after a devastating crash involving a freight train claimed the lives of five individuals Thursday evening, including 27-year-old Sherise Parrish, whose vibrant spirit and warm personality left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

The fatal collision occurred near the intersection of Miller Avenue and County Line Road, where a vehicle carrying five passengers was struck by a high-speed freight train while attempting to cross the tracks. According to preliminary reports, the crossing was marked with signals and signage, but lacked protective gates.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identities of the victims on Friday, including Parrish, one of two young women in the vehicle. All five passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.
