LOS ANGELES, CA — A man was wounded in a police shooting late Saturday night in South Los Angeles, prompting an ongoing investigation by authorities, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Sunday.
The incident unfolded around 10:50 p.m. near Avalon Boulevard and 42nd Place, where officers observed a man armed with a handgun attempting to cross the intersection, according to an LAPD statement.
“The suspect was armed with a handgun; at that time, there was an OIS [officer-involved shooting],” the LAPD reported.
The suspect was struck by police gunfire. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, but as of Sunday, his condition remained unknown.
Following the shooting, officers discovered that the suspect had allegedly confronted a victim in a nearby alley prior to the encounter and had fired at least one shot into the air. The victim was not injured, and the suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene, police said.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division is now handling the investigation, as is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.
No officers were reported injured in the incident. Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or any further details regarding the events that led up to the shooting.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the LAPD as the investigation continues.
