The victims have been identified as 4-year-old Samir Josiah Grubbs and 18-year-old Davyion, whose courageous final act saved a friend. A 17-year-old male was also shot and remains hospitalized in serious condition.

The Incident
According to the Detroit Police Department, an argument escalated into gunfire near the intersection of Kelly and Morang—just steps from where children play and families gather. Two individuals are currently in custody as detectives continue to investigate the tragic events.

Remembering Samir Josiah Grubbs
Samir’s family remembers him as a bright, happy child whose innocence was cruelly stolen. His aunt, Bernice Shanon, shared a heartfelt plea on social media:

“Departed this life too soon, he just wanted to play. Please say his name: Samir Josiah Grubbs. Not just the 4-year-old. Gone too soon. Forever 4.”

Photos show a joyful boy whose infectious smile touched all who knew him. His death is a stark reminder of how gun violence devastates even the youngest members of society.

Honoring Davyion’s Heroism
Davyion, aged 18, is remembered not only as a victim but as a hero. His mother revealed he shielded a friend during the shooting, taking bullets to his own chest.

“My son always was saving the world,” she said, mixing heartbreak with pride.

Former Denby High School dean Toson Knight recalled Davyion as fearless and true to himself, a young man full of promise and heart.

Community Reaction
Reverend W.J. Rideout III, a longtime community pastor, expressed deep grief and called for an end to the violence:

“In all my 33 years of pastoring, this is the 3rd baby I have to eulogize. The violence has to stop. Innocent children are falling due to senseless killing.”

Local residents and activists are organizing vigils and support for the grieving families, while urging for long-term solutions to break the cycle of violence in Detroit’s neighborhoods.

Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are actively pursuing leads and encourage anyone with information to come forward. The identities of the suspects have not been released.

As the community lights candles and shares prayers, the names Samir Josiah Grubbs and Davyion live on as symbols of lost potential and love. Their lives, though cut tragically short, are a powerful call for change.

They were sons, friends, and heroes — and their lives mattered.
