DALLAS, TX — A fatal shooting during an attempted warrant execution in Dallas has resulted in murder charges against two men — one a bounty hunter, the other a licensed private investigator — and has sparked widespread concern over the actions of private individuals acting in law enforcement capacities.
Rodney Brown, 43, and Jorge Moncivais, 23, are facing murder charges following the death of 33-year-old Drew Knowles. The deadly incident unfolded in the 2700 block of Florence Street, where the men were reportedly trying to apprehend Knowles under the authority of a warrant.
According to Dallas police, Knowles was shot multiple times during the confrontation. Despite his injuries, he attempted to flee in a vehicle but soon crashed into a utility pole. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
Brown and Moncivais were both taken into custody and booked into Dallas County Jail, with bond set at $500,000 each.
Authorities are now examining whether proper procedures were followed in the attempted arrest and whether the use of deadly force was justified. The involvement of private individuals in such high-risk actions has raised concerns, particularly given the fatal outcome.
“This incident raises serious questions about oversight, accountability, and the roles private actors play in enforcing the law,” said a representative from a local civil rights advocacy group. “When civilians are allowed to carry out arrests, there must be safeguards to prevent tragic outcomes like this.”
Dallas police confirmed the investigation is ongoing and will include a full review of:
The legitimacy and details of the warrant.
Whether Brown and Moncivais were operating within the bounds of the law.
Whether any protocols were violated leading to the use of lethal force.
Community members are demanding transparency and accountability, calling on city leaders to ensure that bounty hunters and private investigators face stricter regulation.
“The public deserves to know exactly what happened, and whether this death was preventable,” said one local resident who lives near the scene.
As the legal process unfolds, authorities are asking anyone with additional information or video footage related to the incident to contact the Dallas Police Department.
The tragedy has not only left a family grieving but has also reignited conversations about law enforcement authority, vigilante justice, and public safety.
