On March 19, 2025, at approximately 5 p.m., an individual was found deceased outside the Muir Biology Building at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Eyewitnesses reported a significant police presence in the area following the discovery.

UC San Diego University Communications confirmed the fatality in an email to The UCSD Guardian, stating that the individual was not affiliated with the university. The email further mentioned that, out of respect for the deceased, additional details are being withheld at this time.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY - GOD BLESS YOU

Dean of the School of Biological Sciences, Kit Pogliano, addressed the incident in a communication to the biology department, assuring that there is no threat to the campus community.

While the official cause of death has not been confirmed, discussions on platforms like Reddit suggest that the individual may have died by suicide. One user noted, “Someone jumped off of the Biological Sciences building in Muir and died.” However, it’s important to recognize that such accounts are anecdotal and have not been officially verified.

This tragic event is reminiscent of past incidents at UCSD, including the 1970 self-immolation of graduate student George Winne Jr. in Revelle Plaza as a protest against the Vietnam War.

The university emphasizes the importance of mental health and provides resources for those in need. Students are encouraged to reach out to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at https://caps.ucsd.edu/ or call 988 for immediate assistance. As investigations continue, the UCSD community is urged to support one another during this difficult time.
