WICHITA, KS — The Wichita community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Michael Etchingham, a cherished son, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend who passed away at just 31 years old. Michael’s story is one of bright promise and deep challenges. Remembered by his mother and loved ones as a young man full of humor, athleticism, and compassion, Michael excelled academically and in sports, particularly football. His natural ability to make others laugh and his love for music and family made him a beloved presence among friends and relatives.

“Michael’s smile could light up any room,” said a family member. “He was deeply loved and brought joy to so many.”

Despite his charisma and warmth, Michael faced a profound personal battle with schizophrenia—a complex mental illness that shaped the last decade of his life and posed daily challenges few could fully understand.

In sharing Michael’s story, his family hopes to raise awareness about mental illness, fight the stigma surrounding it, and inspire greater compassion and support for those living with schizophrenia and related conditions.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Schizophrenia & Psychosis Action Alliance, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by these illnesses.

Michael’s life, laughter, and spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

🕊️ Rest in peace, Michael. Your memory will live on.
